Photo Challenge Week 2 Update

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!! Week 2 of the #30daychallenge is complete for many of our apprentices and we are starting to get some fun feedback in which we can share with you throughout the week. Until then a little bit more about Graham! Hey, my name is Graham Hackett. I'm interested in animation, writing, photography, and music. Especially music. My favourite genres of music are Rock and Metal. My hobbies include playing bass guitar, listening to music and researching Rock/Metal/music facts and history. I also like taking walks, watching cartoons, browsing the internet, and taking photographs. My greatest skills include writing, English, and knowledge about music history and, to an extent, music production. I am great with Rock/Metal trivia! Overall, I am honest, knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to learn anything I can. I have had previous volunteer experience working as a packager and alphabetizer at different record stores, as well as taking volunteer positions at certain city-sponsored events (i.e. the...

Photo Challenge Week 1!

Photo Challenge Week 1!

Hello, hello, hello!!! We are well on our way in our 30 Day Challenge and our apprentices are rocking it! One of our group 1 apprentices, Graham, shared some of his thoughts on the challenge before he started. When I first heard of this 30 Day Challenge, I was worried about how much I would be able to commit to it; if I would be motivated or invested enough. I wasn't sure how much time I would be able to put across, especially during the upcoming holiday season. I also didn't like the idea most of the suggestions for challenges I came across online. However, I eventually came up with the idea (alongside one of my Wave supervisors), and that was to incorporate a hobby I have always loved: Photography. I have no problem admitting that I love to take photographs as often as possible, whether it be photos of people, objects, nature, or some kind of moment in time, whether it...

Emma S — Pre-Challenge Refelction

(Image from: lovethispic.com) For WAVE’s 30-Day challenge, I (Emma) am focusing on my self-esteem. I have been given a list of 30 questions, each one designed to get me thinking about myself more positively, and I will answer one per day. Once per week, I will review my progress in the challenge and how it made me feel. The end goal of this challenge is to break old habits of negativity and self-criticism, remind myself of all the things I like about myself (the aspects of myself I tend to ignore or neglect), and boost my self-image.   I will admit, while I’m looking forward to positivity, I’m also nervous about taking on such a challenge. I often worry I’ll miss a day, or burn out when I take on regular challenges. It isn’t easy having to adjust my pace, which is normally to work when inspiration strikes. I’m worried I’ll come down with a chronic case of writer’s block every time I...

30 Day Challenge!!

(Image from: jillandrews.ca) Welcome to WAVE’s 30 day challenges!! Each month our WAVE apprentices set goals for themselves; SMART goals that they can work on throughout the month that will help them towards gaining meaningful employment or another long term goal that they might have such as bus riding independence, or the ability to prepare their own meals. This time we are asking them to do something a little different. We are still going to be setting our monthly goals but we have also asked them to choose a 30 day challenge. Something far away from the realm of work and focusing on something that they enjoy or something they, well, want to challenge themselves with.   The reason we are doing this in a work and volunteer experience program is that there are a TON of transferable skills that come into play when doing these challenges: discipline, dedication, how to stay motivated when you just want to quit, not meeting goals, dealing...

Hey, this is Graham Hackett, returning to posting the WAVE Blog after a great summer vacation! Today, me and the rest of Group 1 went to our usual base - McKellar Park. While there, we worked on making individual lists of our personal strengths and weaknesses, followed by a "SWAT Analysis" (listing our strengths and weaknesses as well as possible opportunities and threats when searching for potential jobs). After lunch and heading back to Dovercourt, we each took a "career interest" test online, followed by a job searching session based on the results we got on that test....

Hello, it's Graham again Today was the last day of WAVE classes for the Wednesday group. My day at WAVE with my group began with our usual  walk to Mckellar Park. While there, we worked on constructing cover letters to go with our resumes. After that, we did some job and volunteer searching. My half of the job and volunteer searching involved applying for a job at Shopper's Drug Mart. After returning to Dovercourt, we reviewed audio clips of each of our job interviews from last week, offering each other commentary on how we behaved during it (i.e. our tone of voice and our confidence). After that, seeing as it was the last day of WAVE, we ended it off by playing two group-oriented games outside of the building - Charades and "Sell This Rock", the latter of which involved pairing in groups of two (acting as the seller and customer respectively), discussing the selling points of the titular rock. This has...

Hey, this is Graham Today, me and the rest of the group (including one new and one newish member) walked over to McKellar Park to watch a video about customer service, followed by a lesson on it. After that, we went outside of the building to participate in a group exercise during which we practice good customer service by taking on the roles of employee and customer. After returning to Dovercourt and having lunch, we made plans for next week's Dovercourt garage sale. After the time of this writing, we will be filling in a job application as a group...

Hey, this is Graham! Today, I went with my group to the Carlingwood library to do some leisurely reading, as well as use the library's computers to type messages to our program's coordinator describing what we were doing at the library, and where we were going after. After that, we walked over to the Carlingwood Shopping Centre, where the group applied to stores of choice and dropped off their resumes. After returning to Dovercourt and having lunch, we worked as a group in filling out job application forms on Wal-Mart's official website, pretending to apply for a job there. P.S.: From May 18-19, there will be garage sale going on at Dovercourt. Come out and support our group!...

Today, my group went to McKellar Park, where we all discussed "9 ways to make a great first impression" on a potential employer or co-worker. Later on, after returning to Dovercourt and having lunch, we had the chance to apply those lessons by partaking in mock interviews with two men associated with Dovercourt. I did quite well overall in my interview, though it became apparent that I still will need to work on honing my eye contact skills for any future interviews... and I will gladly keep working on that! Graham...
